A Multigenerational Story of Family, Tradition, and Belonging

For November's meeting, we will be discussing The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See

A historical novel about Li-yan, a girl from a remote Akha hill tribe in China, and her daughter, Haley, who is adopted by an American family. The story follows Li-yan's journey from her traditional village, where she defies customs by having a child out of wedlock and giving her up, to becoming a successful tea entrepreneur, while Haley grows up in California, searching for her origins. The novel explores themes of motherhood, tradition vs. modernity, and cultural identity, with Pu'er tea and the Akha people's rituals serving as a central focus.

Print copies will be available at the circulation desk beginning approximately one month before the discussion. You may also be able to borrow this title in eBook and eAudiobook formats through MCPL's digital services (such as Libby/OverDrive and Hoopla, where available).
