Poesía y Resistencia en Español, English, y Spanglish
Saturday, November 14
4:00pm - 5:30pm
Reuben Jackson was an American poet, educator, jazz historian, and radio host. We'll read some of his work, and then get inspired to write some poetry.
As a poet, Jackson published two collections—Fingering the Keys (1990) and Scattered Clouds (2019)—and his work appeared in over 50 literary anthologies. He was also a fondly-recalled teacher, radio host, and music critic, remembered for his generosity and mentorship. Jazz was a major influence on his work, often with themes of music, Black identity, and social justice, resonating with both peers and younger generations.
He hosted Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio from 2012 to 2018, and had a regular show WPFW-FM in Washington D.C. He also served as the curator of the Smithsonian’s Duke Ellington Collection in Washington, D.C., for more than twenty years. His music reviews were published in the Washington Post, Washington City Paper, Jazz Times, and featured on All Things Considered.
