Join the African American Authors group to read and learn about books by authors of African, Caribbean, and African American descent. This group meets on the 4th Sunday of the month at Germantown Library. This month the group is discussing Song Yet Sung by James McBride. Song Yet Sung by James McBride is a gripping pre–Civil War tale set in 1850s Maryland. It follows Liz Spocott, an escaped enslaved woman wounded in the head, who flees into the Eastern Shore swamps. Wielding a secret network known as “the Code” and haunted by prophetic visions of the future, she struggles to survive alongside other fugitives. Meanwhile, ruthless slave catchers, led by Patty Cannon and her men, pursue her relentlessly. Along her journey, Liz encounters diverse allies—free Black communities, swamp dwellers, and fellow escapees—each shaping her path toward a mysterious and transformative destiny. Through lyrical prose and magical realism, the novel explores resilience, hope, and the meaning of freedom in a dangerous, divided world James McBride is a New York Times bestselling author of The Good Lord Bird, winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction. This event will take place in the Group Meeting Room 5 on the lower level.
