René and Cubano Groove are keeping traditional Cuban music alive while exploring new directions. From boogaloo to Latin-jazz, and everything in between. All ages, free, in the Social Hall, 2nd Floor.
Based in Washington, DC, percussionist René Ibáñez has performed with many internationally known artists, like his Cuban countrywoman Celia Cruz, as well as local orchestras like Peligro, Sin Miedo, La Tentación, La Clave, Patrick Alban, and María Rodríguez.
His band, Cubano Groove, plays jazz, salsa, boogaloo and other Latin forms and keeps traditional Cuban Music – old and new – alive. Cuban music reflects many influences, especially West African and European (especially Spanish) music but is a true melting pot of influences, including indigenous traditions.
