If you've ever wanted to try your hand at DC's official dance, here's your chance! (If you've already got some moves, you're welcome too!) This free beginner class will get you moving and grooving!
Hand dance is a form of swing dance that can be traced as far back as the 1920s, springing from Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug, to the 1950s when dancers in the nation's capital developed their own variety called DC Hand Dance. During the disco era, hand dance began to fade into the background. It resurfaced in the Washington dance community in the 1980's and has been enjoying a resurgence ever since. Today, the community is thriving with classes, events, and other opportunities to promote the culture and tradition of DC Hand Dance so that it continues for generations to come.
Carl Davis, founder of Odyssey Hand Dance Academy will be teaching Intro to DC Hand Dance workshops at Aspen Hill Library. No experience is required! There will be 3 opportunities to participate and classes are not cumulative. Each workshop is designed for the beginner student. Feel free to join in at any point. Registration is required for each session you plan to attend. This program is suitable for adults and older teens.
