Bernice A. Bennett is an author, researcher, talk show host, and guest lecturer based in Silver Spring. The Homestead Act didn't apply just to African-Americans, but many homesteaders were Black men and women in the South, toiling in familiar land but now in an unfamiliar role -- as owners.'Black Homesteaders of the South' aims to change the narrative about these largely unknown pioneers.
