Join Vocales Verticales for an afternoon of poetry and writing. How can we use poetry as a tool for resistance? Discover how others did it before and write some poems.
Roque Dalton was a prominent Salvadoran poet and political activist, born in San Salvador, El Salvador. Initially named Roque García, he was the illegitimate son of nurse Marcía García and wealthy Irish-American Winnal Dalton. Born in 1935 and assassinated in 1975, he was an influential figure in the history of Latin America as a poet, essayist, intellectual, and revolutionary. Beyond his achievements as a poet are his political writings and political work in his native El Salvador. His literary contributions, including the award-winning works "Dos puños por la tierra" and "El turno del ofiendido," reflected violence and injustice in El Salvador.
We'll read some of Roque's poems and get inspired to write our own poems. Leamos poemas de Roque y vamos a inspirarnos para escribir nuestros proppios poemas.
This will be followed by the prompts of the day, which will be available for those attendees who would like to write. There will also be time for sharing of poems and exchanging feedback among participants. The program will take place in the Multi-Purpose Room.
The Washington DC-based Vocales Verticales project aims to promote poetry and the arts in Spanish, as well as to create spaces, both online and in-person, that connect the community through poetry. More info:
