This series explores the history of the Washington, DC area through selected places of worship.

The films discuss the history of the Washington, DC area through selected places of worship, from the earliest churches and synagogues within DC to those made later in the suburbs. This includes a Ukrainian church, a Muslim Community Center, a Buddhist Wat, a Vietnamese Catholic Church, and a Hindu temple on New Hampshire Avenue. Here is the program for the afternoon:

2:00pm: Introduction to the films by Executive Producer Amita Sarin

Episode 1: Shaping The Federal City

Episode 2: A National Array

3:15pm: Intermission

Episode 3: Mid-Century Transformations

Episode 4: Expanding To The Suburbs

4:30pm: Q & A with the filmmakers Amita Sarin and Ori Z. Soltes

This project is supported in part by funding from the Montgomery County Government and the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Amita Sarin is an immigrant from India, spending her first decades in the US writing about the immigrant experience.  It became evident to her that religious traditions, especially sacred architecture, are among the most visible and interesting aspects of any culture. More info about this project: https://www.sacredpieceofhome.com

The program will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room, Rm 312. Contact the Library at 240-777-0678 if you have questions about the program.
