Join us for a 4-6th grade book discussion, followed by a fun STEM activity. This month we will be discussing Unplugged by Gordon Korman. Electronic copies are available for digital download via the Libby App or Hoopla and physical copies can be reserved and picked up at your local library.
The discussion will be followed by a fun STEM activity.
Discussion Questions:
- What is this book about? What are the main themes?
- Jett is forced to give up all his technology, his phone, watch, tablet... How would you feel if you had to give up all your tech? Would you be able to do it?
- What do you think of Camp Oasis? Would you enjoy it? Do you think there are any benefits of a wellness retreat?
- What is Jett’s relationship with Matt?
- Taking care of Needles means something different to each of the kids in the book. How does taking care of Needles affect Grace, Jett, Brooklyn and Tyrell?
- Needles is a cold-blooded reptile. What does this mean?
- Jett seems to have a strained family life. Do you think Jett’s behavior has anything to do with his family?
- At one point, Jett compares the people at the Oasis as an “ostrich with its head in the sand.” What does this expression mean and how are the people at Oasis acting like this?
- What is Brooklyn’s relationship to Magnus and why does she try to hide it?
- We often think that having more “stuff” will make us happier, at least that’s what Jett thinks. What do you think? Has Jett grown as a person by the end of the book?
