Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg is a visual artist who has demonstrated the power of art to touch hundreds of thousands of lives.

In Fall of 2020, images of Firstenberg's In America: How could this happen… art installation graced over six hundred news articles on six continents, making visible the COVID-19 pandemic’s cost in American lives. Her art created a national space for mourning.

In September 2021, Firstenberg recreated this art installation, newly named In America: Remember, on the National Mall.  For seventeen days, over 650,000 white flags fluttered near the Washington Monument. To ensure access for all, Firstenberg partnered with Esri, Inc, the global leader in geographic information systems, to present the art concurrently in the digital sphere.

Firstenberg believes art has incredible power to educate, inspire, and change the lens through which viewers understand social issues. Interviews, research, and reading ground her work on topics that include gun violence, Native Americans, homelessness, and political partisanship.  The underlying theme is upholding individual dignity, a value honed through her twenty-five years of hospice volunteering.

In this Zoom presentation, Firstenberg will talk with us about why and how she created the In America art installations. Firstenberg believes in times like ours, when words fall on unlistening ears, art is not an elective, but an imperative. Join us to view photos of her art and learn how she became an artist and is inspired.

Co-hosted with Bethesda Metro Area Village. BMAV is a volunteer organization providing services and community support to allow people to remain in their homes as they age.
