Join us for this event to meet Richard Bell, author of "Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped Into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home"
During the time the Underground Railroad was helping Black slaves escape into free states, a parallel network—the Reverse Underground Railroad—was abducting thousands of free African Americans and selling them into slavery. Bell, who teaches Early American history at the University of Maryland, tells the story of five Black boys who were kidnapped from Philadelphia in 1825. Determined to regain their freedom, the five worked together to escape and eventually returned home, where they initiated a manhunt to bring their captors to justice.
