Join Vocales Verticales for an afternoon of poetry and writing. How can we use poetry as a tool for resistance? Discover how others did it before and write some poems.

Ilya Kaminsky was born in Odesa, Ukraine in 1977, and arrived in the United States in 1993, when his family was granted asylum by the American government. He is the author of Deaf Republic (Graywolf Press) and Dancing In Odessa (Tupelo Press). Deaf Republic (which includes "We Lived Happily During the War") was a New York Times’ Notable Book, and was also named Best Book of the Year by dozens of other publications, including the Washington Post, Times Literary Supplement, The Telegraph, and many others. His poetry often explores themes of war, silence, and the human condition, and is characterized by its inventive language, and the ability to weave together the personal and the political.  In 2019, Kaminsky was selected by BBC as “one of the 12 artists that changed the world,” with poems translated into over twenty languages, and published in many countries.
