For beginners to experts, come learn about the aspects of successfully choosing and raising healthy houseplants, followed by a plant swap!

Join Meipo Martin from the Master Gardeners of Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Service as she teaches us about how to choose and raise houseplants that are right for you space.

Since many tropical plants have been raised indoors as houseplants, they have a range of needs. Meipo's talk will cover:

  • How to assess and select your site,
  • Plant needs: light, temperature, humidity and soil requirements,
  • When to water and fertilize,
  • When to groom, trim, prune and/or pinch your plants,
  • Common cultivation problems, pests and remedies,
  • How to pick a healthy plant suitable for your site.

Plant Swap Details:

Feel free to bring a house plant cutting to swap. Don't have plants to share yet? The library will have a limited supply of Spider Plants to give away.

About Meipo Martin

Meipo Martin was born in Hong Kong, where she started growing houseplants and herbs on the apartment windowsill. In 1998, she moved to the United States.  In her new garden, her love for plants came into full bloom and she became a Montgomery County Master Gardener in 2015. Meipo believes gardening should be accessible to all, and it does not have to be expensive or hard. To share her knowledge, Meipo gives a variety of presentations on gardening methods for the master gardener organization. When she is not gardening, Meipo is a wife, an Aikido instructor, a woodcarver, a blogger and a sewist.
