A presentation by Alexandra N. Harris, senior editor at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, discussing her book Why We Serve: Native Americans in the US Armed Forces.
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month and Military Family Month, Alexandra N. Harris, senior editor at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, will discuss the book and exhibition she co-authored with Dr. Mark Hirsch, entitled Why We Serve: Native Americans in the United States Armed Forces (2020). Published in conjunction with the establishment of the National Native American Veterans Memorial on the museum’s grounds, Why We Serve chronicles the long history of service by American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians in the US military. Harris will discuss the book’s major themes and touch on significant contributions made by Indigenous service members.
