Meet local author Robert Biggar, who will discuss his book, Eyewitness to AIDS: on the frontlines of a pandemic.
Join us as Dr. Robert Biggar discusses his book, answers questions, and signs copies. Eyewitness to AIDS is intended for a general audience interested in how a scientist approaches a completely novel epidemic, unprecedented in how it assaults the body, with an unknown cause. AIDS was not the last such epidemic, as the recent Covid pandemic demonstrates. And there will be others.
Dr. Biggar is an internationally recognized expert on HIV/AIDS. As an infectious disease specialist and medical epidemiologist at the National Institute of Health, he set up many of the earliest studies of this mysterious disease, beginning in 1981, just as the first cases were being reported. His studies documented its devastating course and revealed its routes of transmission, critical information leading to the discovery of the cause of AIDS. He helped break open the emerging tragedy of the epidemic in Africa and its spread around the world. Taking us to the current era, he explains the dimensions of our current American and global AIDS problem, one of the greatest public health disasters of our time.
Dr. Biggar is now retired and lives in the Edgemoor community of Bethesda. During his career, he has lived and worked in Ghana, Denmark, India, France, and Australia. He has published more than 350 articles in the medical literature and three books on HIV/AIDS for medical professionals.
