Terry Repak and Anne Echols will discuss their new books, Circling Home: What I Learned By Living Elsewhere, and A Tale of Two Maidens. Repak's book is a memoir about the challenges of raising children, making a home and pursuing a career in east and west African countries at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Echols’ book, A Tale of Two Maidens, is a novel about a young woman who becomes a scribe and defies convention by embarking on a dangerous journey, where she crosses paths with Joan of Arc.
Repak and Echols will discuss what it was like for women to risk leaving their homes in the late Middle Ages versus the present, and how forming bonds with people of other cultures and backgrounds was transformative. After the talk, there will be a Q and A followed by a book signing.
Terry Repak attended Bethesda schools and worked as a reporter for syndicated columnist Jack Anderson in Washington, DC. She lived in Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Switzerland with her family and has written travel articles and stories for newspapers, magazines, and online publications. She’s the author of Waiting on Washington: Central American Workers in the Nation’s Capital and the mother of two global citizens.
Anne Echols is the coauthor (with Marty Williams) of two nonfiction books, Between Pit and Pedestal: Women in the Middle Ages and An Annotated Index of Medieval Women. Her research for those projects inspired her to go beyond historical facts and imagine the fictional stories of ordinary women from the Middle Ages. A Tale of Two Maidens: A Novel is her first historical fiction. After earning a BA and master’s degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Anne enjoyed a long career of teaching English to high school students with language learning disabilities.
