What can the art of Japan tell us about the society and history of that country—its ideals, beliefs, and aspirations? Japanese Art Historian Carol Morland will explore Japanese art through the lens of three moments of contact with China: the 15th century importation of Chinese culture by Zen Buddhist monasteries; the 18th century implantation of Chinese literati culture to a very different Japanese milieu; and the joint creation in the early 20th century of a “national style” that was both traditional and modern.

Carol Morland has special expertise in the painting of the Edo period. She has lived, worked, and traveled extensively in Asia. Carol has served as a Smithsonian Journeys Expert on tours to Japan and has taught at a variety of institutions, including the University of Hawaii and Temple University-Japan. She also served as an assistant curator at the Honolulu Museum of Art, where she focused on the museum's collection of ukiyo-e. Carol holds an M.A. in Japanese Studies and a Ph.D. in Japanese art history from the University of Michigan.

This program is free and open to all and is presented by Little Falls Village in partnership with the Little Falls Library of Montgomery County Public Libraries.
