Authors Alexandra Harris and Mark Hirsch will join us for a discussion of their recent book, "Why We Serve: Native Americans in the U.S. Armed Forces," published by the Smithsonian Institution.

Why We Serve describes in vivid detail the generations of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during every military conflict  since the country's founding. The book features rare stories of Native service as well as a diverse, striking array of images. Included are sketches, photographs, contemporary art, and objects from the National Museum of the American Indian's collections. The authors will discuss their book while responding to questions related to this wide-ranging topic.

Alexandra N. Harris is a senior editor and writer at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. She holds an M.A. in American Indian studies from UCLA.  Mark Hirsch is a historian at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. He holds a PhD in American history from Harvard University. This book was published in 2020 in conjunction with the dedication of the National Native American Veterans Memorial at the Museum.
