McDowell is a gardener, writer and teacher. Her latest book is Emily Dickinson's Gardening Life, which looks at the plants, places and gardens that inspired the iconic poet.
Marta McDowell teaches horticulture and landscape history at the New York Botanical Gardens, and has taught at universities and other national garden institutions. She has another book coming out this year about "The Secret Garden" and its author, Frances Hodgson Burnett.
