Little Falls Village Presents - Virtual

Who Shall Live & Whom Should We Let Die: COVID Ethics

Historically, pandemics raise a set of excruciatingly difficult ethical and moral questions. How should we allocate scarce resources like lifesaving ventilators, protective equipment or vaccines?

Historically, pandemics raise a set of excruciatingly difficult ethical and moral questions. How should we allocate scarce resources like lifesaving ventilators, protective equipment or vaccines? Should the young be prioritized over the old? As we aim at creating new therapeutics and vaccines quickly, what are acceptable trade-offs between speed and safety?  What is the proper balance between civil liberties and public health e.g. requiring a quarantine?  What should we do about the fact that in the COVID-19 pandemic, African Americans are dying at three times the rate of white Americans?

To help us discuss these issues, Dr. Mildred Solomon, the president of The Hastings Center, the nation’s founding bioethics research institute in New York, and Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will describe COVID-19’s ethical landscape.  She will raise for discussion the major ethical issues we must resolve to bring the pandemic under control and will help us think about how we might rebuild our society.

This program is free and open to all and is presented by Little Falls Village in collaboration with COFFE (Council of Former Federal Executives & Associates) and in partnership with the Little Falls Library of Montgomery County Public Libraries.

Registration is required at least a day prior to the event. Please register at www.littlefallsvillage.org/Solomon or by calling the Little Falls Village office at 301-320-3267.
