Backyard Composting with Geobins
This 1-hour hands-on workshop supports the Backyard Compost Bin Program and introduces participants to the Geobins distributed through Olney Library. The session provides a comprehensive overview of how to set up, use, and maintain a backyard compost system using a Geobin, with a strong emphasis on practical strategies, troubleshooting, and confident long‑term use. The Geobins are free of charge to Montgomery County residents. They are specifically for composting yard trim (not food scraps).
Workshop Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
• Understand what a Geobin is, how it works, and why it’s an effective backyard composting option.
• Know how to assemble and place a Geobin in their yard.
• Learn what materials can be composted, how to create a balanced mix, and how to maintain an active pile.
• Feel comfortable diagnosing and correcting common composting issues such as odors, pests, and slow decomposition.
• Leave with tips for seasonal maintenance and long‑term care.
