Meet the Author: Dr. Fabio Capano

Cold War Trieste

Enjoy a presentation by historian and author Dr. Fabio Capano on the subjects of nationalism, diplomacy, and Italian identity in a contested borderland.

Fabio Capano is a Visiting Scholar in Residence in the History Department at American University, specializing in twentieth-century Europe. He is the author of the new book, Cold War Trieste: Nationalism, Diplomacy, and Italianità in a Contested Borderland. His research covers nationalism, political violence, modern Italy, and Cold War borderlands. He has held teaching and administrative roles, and his work has been published in academic journals and edited volumes. 

How did nationalism survive and transform on the southern edge of the Iron Curtain? This book investigates the contested socio-political landscape of the Adriatic city of Trieste and its surrounding borderlands between 1945 and 1975. Taking a multidimensional approach, the author explores how the entanglement of local, national, and international politics shaped the enduring influence of nationalism in Cold War Italy. Drawing on a rich tapestry of primary sources, the book reveals the hidden power dynamics between the halls of power in Rome and the streets of Trieste, showing how they fundamentally reshaped the community’s relationship with the nation-state during the long journey toward the 1975 Osimo Treaty, which permanently settled the postwar border between Italy and Yugoslavia.

The program will be held in the First Floor Meeting Room. Dr. Capano will give a multimedia presentation including opportunities to ask questions.
