Less Lawn, More Life with Native Plants: Part 2 - Practical Tips

Whether you've been a native plant enthusiast for years or are just starting, come learn ways to improve the habitat value of your garden! A continuation of last month's talk but new commers welcome!

Join Merikay Smith from the Master Gardeners of Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Service as she shares tips and techniques for replacing lawn with native plants along with what she's learned about that process over the past 15+ years. Topics covered include defining native plants and their benefits, a simple layering process to kill lawn and create beds, design options, example native plants for various conditions, native trees, no-mow areas, avoiding invasive plants, resources and more.

About Merikay Smith

Merikay Smith became a Maryland Master Gardener in 2007 and led the MCMG Speakers' Bureau. Merikay is a Board member of Latter-day Saint Earth Stewardship, launching their first local chapter here in 2016. Check out the native plant garden this local chapter created at historic Pleasant View. She has helped mentor an additional 11 new chapters of LDSES located across the globe. Merikay has also served many years on the Boards of both the Muddy Branch Alliance and Seneca Creek Stewardship Partners, recently as president of SCWP.
