Montgomery County and the War of 1812 - In-person
at the Olney Library
Sunday, August 16
12:30pm - 2:00pm
In follow-up to her successful lecture on the events leading to the US' 1776 founding, join historian Sandra Heiler for another exciting talk--this time on Montgomery County's role in the War of 1812!
PLEASE NOTE 12:30 PM START TIME.
There were no battles in Montgomery County during the War of 1812; no British troops marched through the county’s streets; no rioters protested in its towns. But Montgomery County—its roads, its towns, and, especially, its people became deeply involved in the war— some as victims of one of the most vile events of the war, others as heroes of one of its finest, and others just doing their duty as they saw it. This is a talk about how and why the county responded to the war the way it did.
Join Brookeville historian Sandra Heiler for another exciting talk-- in this case, around Montgomery County's role in the War of 1812. As part of the lecture, learn how Brookeville, MD, became known as the "US Capital for a Day," when then-President James Madison, along with Attorney General Richard Rush and General John Mason, fled Washington, D.C., after British forces burned all the public buildings in the city.
NO REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED BUT SEATING IS LIMITED. Q&A to follow. Hope you can join us!
