Investigating Insects!

A Spring Children's Nature Program

Why are there so many little six-legged creatures flying, crawling & buzzing around, especially in springtime? Come learn about the importance of insects. A story, presentation, sing-along & crafts!

If it seems in spring like insects are everywhere, that's because there are over 10 quintillion of them (that's 10,000,000,000,000,000,000), with over 91,000 different species (kinds) just in the US and over 1.5 million in the world! Yes, they can be annoying, irritating and even sometimes carry diseases. But they are also vitally important to nature, especially in spring, when many of them work as pollinators, bringing the necessary material from plant to plant to make flowers bloom. They also have many other benefits to humans and other animals, including as food!

Come celebrate a belated Earth Day and join us in investigating the flying, crawling, buzzing world of insects--how they live, what they do, why they're so important, and what the difference is between an insect and a bug. We'll have a brief story and presentation about butterflies, beetles, ladybugs, flies and bees; have a sing-along with fun movements; and get a chance to make and/or color some insects of your own using basic craft materials. Recommended for ages 3-10.

Library Program Attendance (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the suggested age range of the program. Children attending an MCPL program under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attending a program intended for children must have an accompanying child.
