Learn the basics of seed starting!

Join Joel Patton from the Master Gardeners of Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Service as he teaches us the basics of seed starting.

You’ll discover how to select your seeds, keep a journal to track your seedling growth, and when to start seeds indoors. You’ll receive tips for which planting mediums and containers to use, as well as the best lighting, watering methods, and fertilizers.

About Joel Patton

Joel Patton retired from Virginia Tech Applied Research Center, Virginia Tech University in the summer of 2023. Since his retirement he has become a Montgomery County Master Gardener, completed a certificate in Environmental Horticulture at Montgomery College and is working towards an advanced degree in environmental Horticulture. He is also extensively involved in converting his backyard into a native plant habitat, His other volunteer activities include serving as a Montgomery County Parks Volunteer at Brookside Gardens and Pope Farm and participating in Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association (MNLGA) meetings and events. He is also a member of the Maryland Native Plant Society, the Wild Ones.
