Selections will be from popular musicals such as Les Misérables, Camelot, Man of La Mancha, A Little Night Music, My Fair Lady, and South Pacific; opera arias from Carmen, Tosca, Rigoletto and Turandot; and pop standards by Judy Garland, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Nat King Cole. Michael has confirmed he plans to sing beloved Irish ballad Danny Boy and the Neapolitan song, O Sole Mio (popularized by Luciano Pavarotti). Before performing each piece, he'll a brief overview of its history and context.
Michael Hayes recently retired from a 35-year opera/musical theater career, where he earned a reputation as one of the world’s most versatile and charismatic tenors. His wide-ranging repertory included roles in the world of opera as well as the Broadway stage. These included the Duke in Rigoletto (with Cleveland Opera) and Danilo in Lehar’s The Merry Widow (in a PBS national broadcast of New York City Opera’s ‘Live from Lincoln Center’) to the title role in Verdi’s Otello (with RIA Opera in Amsterdam, Opera de Nantes, France and Summer Opera of Washington). One of Michael's last roles was Roscoe in Stephen Sondheim's Follies in which he made his Broadway debut at the Marriott Marquis, and which he also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and the Ahmanson Theater in LA. Other musical theater credits include: Ravenal in Showboat w/ Tom Poston at Sacramento Music Circus; Freddy in My Fair Lady with Noel Harrison; Padre in Man of La Mancha; and Billy Bigelow in Carousel.
