Join Dr Edward Max, Md. PhD from NIH to learn about nanomachines of enzymes and measure the activity of one of these nanomachines in an easily available body fluid.
For most of human history it was believed that all living things are animated by a mysterious “vital force” and only in the last century have we come to understand that cells are equipped with thousands of different kinds of molecular nanomachines. In this STEMSmart session we will focus on one class of nanomachines called enzymes that control the chemical reactions that are needed by the body. You will also measure the activity of one of these nanomachines in an easily available bodily fluid: saliva.
Recommended age: 9 to 12. Parents/caregivers must accompany children under the age of 12 during the program.
