According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in forty-four children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 17 percent of children aged three to seventeen have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities. Yet there are still stigmas around autism.

Kuri Yasuno, who lives in Bethesda, wants to share her story as a first-time mom of a special-needs child in the hopes of inspiring awareness, inclusion and especially kindness. As a child, Kuri had immigrated to the US from Japan. She went on to work at the Discovery Health Channel and the National Geographic Channel. When her son, Daniel, was diagnosed with being on the autism spectrum, Kuri took her creative spirit and her positive mindset to shift her focus from her career to his education and social skills development. She is the author of a new book that is drawing attention. It shares her son’s intimate story and their connection with humorous anecdotes and honest introspection. In Autism with a Side of Sushi, Kuri gives you the unique perspective as an immigrant from Japan who can empathize and sympathize with the feelings of wanting to assimilate and feel included.
