Join decorative arts historian, Elizabeth Lay, for a visual presentation that explores how European immigrants helped shape mid-century modern American design.

America experienced a wave of European immigration during the early twentieth century. Some were escaping war and oppression, while others were seeking opportunities in a growing democracy. These immigrants included the giants of architecture and design: Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Laszlo Moholy Nagy, Eliel and Loja Saarinen, as well as Joseph and Anni Albers. Nearly all arrived on teaching visas for universities and institutions around the country, inspiring the next generation of designers and architects. Join us while Lay examines how their work and teachings changed the face of American Design.
