Kitchen Science!

Ever wonder what's going on when you cook or bake, or even clean up afterward? Join this interactive event for a look inside the kitchen.

Cooking is said to be an art, and baking a science, but really, science is involved in many choices in the kitchen, whether you are cooking or baking. And cleaning up afterward also involves science, too! 

Each of the activities involved will be safe for elementary aged children although adult supervision is highly encouraged. We will not be using a stove or oven for any activity.

The following ingredients will be needed:

• oil (canola, olive or any other cooking oil)
• vinegar (white distilled, balsamic, apple cider, red wine, or any other)
• Dijon mustard
• Active dry yeast (2 packages or 2 teaspoons)
• salt (any kind)
• half and half or milk or heavy whipping cream
• baking soda
• white sugar
• flour (all purpose, whole wheat, bread, any as long as it has gluten)
• vanilla extract
• 8 cups of ice cubes
• measuring spoons
• measuring cups
• oven mitts or kitchen towel
• timer
• 2 balloons
• 2 empty water or soda bottles
• 2 gallon-sized ziplock bags
