Education - denied to enslaved people - was one of the most important priorities of African Americans. But in Montgomery County, where slavery existed, public education was not available to Black children until more than ten years after it was established for white children. Even then, the practice of “separate but equal” schools was anything but equal, and no Black high school was built until long into the 20th century.
Get inspired by these African American schools and their incredible impact on Black education all over the South! A surprising number of these schools still stand in Montgomery County, including several built through a partnership between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald - "the biggest philanthropist you've never heard of"!
