Save a story of someone you love or a history you would love to know. Learn how to capture an oral history interview from start to finish, with hands-on practice!

Join us in the 3rd floor meeting room for a workshop on Oral History presented by Debra Elfenbein, History & Social Studies Librarian at the Central Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. This presentation is made possible through the Maryland State Library Resource Center.

The program will introduce you to the skills you'll need for high-quality interviews, including:

  • Choose your narrator and goals
  • Figure expenses
  • Prepare questions
  • Master effective interview techniques
  • Protect your narrator’s right to privacy and dignity
  • Know production methods and equipment to record, preserve, and share your interviews
  • Practice interviewing other participants hands-on with a Pratt Oral History Digital Audio Kit
  • Review effective and ineffective interviews of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, and civil rights activist Gloria Richardson

Join us every Wednesday night for activities for teens. There will be a wide variety of activities including movies, gaming, arts & craft, Lo-fi Study sessions, guest speakers, and more! Ask to speak with our Teen Librarians for more detailed information on what's planned each week. Have fun with friends, make new ones, or just hang out. Drop ins welcome, no registration needed! Snacks provided! SSL hours provided for help with program planning, cleanup or other event based opportunities.

This program is for ages 13-19. Library Program Attendance (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the suggested age range of the program.
