As the Founder and Creative Director of IDEA, Michael Douma combines two of his passions: fulfilling the educational promise of technology and increasing linguistic, scientific, and cultural literacy. Michael leads IDEA in researching, developing, and refining mobile apps and technological tools to promote both informal and formal learning.

Michael's journey began with a background in neuroscience and an early role at NIST, where he conceived and launched time.gov, the first single-purpose .gov site. This experience sparked his commitment to creating digital solutions with broad social impact.

Michael has led numerous groundbreaking initiatives, including SpicyNodes, a visualization platform that attracted over 40 million users, and OtherWordly, an award-winning mobile game that combines word puzzles with cultural exploration.

Since 1999, IDEA has worked at the intersection of technology and education. This nonprofit organization’s goal is to boost linguistic, scientific, and cultural literacy. IDEA develops free and affordable mobile apps and games that promote vocabulary expansion, critical engagement, and adaptive thinking for all players, regardless of age, lived experience, or ability.
