Interested in joining? The Book Club meets the second Thursday of each month from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, meeting room 2. We'll talk over the book "The Glass Hotel" by Emily St. John Mandel.
The book chosen for this month's discussion is "The Glass Hotel" by Emily St. John Mandel. It's essentially a novel about the Great Recession of 2008 and, at its heart, features a fictionalized version of the Ponzi scheme that Bernard Madoff profited from. At the heart of the novel is the life of a young woman named Vincent, a hotel worker in a five-star hotel on an island off the coast of British Columbia, and an ultra-wealthy con man. It follows the important points of her life through to her mysterious disappearance from an international shipping vessel in 2018. Along the way, the book explores a Ponzi scheme, the international art market, and the heights and depths of economic social status in America. It captures how precarious life is, in a way that feels particularly resonant now.
Copies of this book are available at the check out desk, while supplies last.
