Calling all readers in Grades 4-6: Come join "No Shelf Control," a book discussion group just for kids 9-12. Read and discuss this month's mystery and solve a mystery of our own!
If you are in grades 4, 5 or 6 and love to read and have fun talking about books and characters, No Shelf Control is the place for you! This month, we'll discuss "Montgomery and the Case of the Golden Key," the story of ten-year-old Montgomery Carver who tries to solve a mystery around a strange object he's found in his Chicago neighborhood in 2008, amid the background of a presidential election and the city's attempt to lure the Olympics into town. This is the initial book in the Black Teacup Mysteries series by author Tracy Occomy Crowder, who was influenced by Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Harriet the Spy. The author, main characters, and several themes in the book reflect important dimensions of Black History Month. We will also have a mystery activity for participants to solve after the book discussion!
You can borrow a copy (with a specially prepared reading guide just for our group) from the Connie Morella Library; just ask at the Check Out or Information Desks for the September book for No Shelf Control. You can also access the book as an e-book or an e-audiobook on the free Libby app or Overdrive online (the book is not currently available through Hoopla). If you get an e-version, please contact Mr. Jeff for the reading guide (jeffrey.coster@montgomerycountymd.gov). Even if you are not able to finish the reading, please come anyway and see if No Shelf Control might just be the place for you! The book for the March 19 meeting will be handed out at this meeting, and then available to pick up from the Connie Morella Library by anyone who missed it.
Library Program Attendance (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the suggested age range of the program. Children attending an MCPL program under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attending a program intended for children must have an accompanying child.
