Calling all readers in Grades 4-6: Come join "No Shelf Control," a book discussion group just for kids 9-12. This month's book offers suspense, adventure, mythology and a just little bit of magic!
If you are in grades 4, 5 or 6 and love to read and have fun talking about books and characters, No Shelf Control is the place for you! Over the course of the school year, we’ll read books with a wide range of characters, themes and genres. In this month’s novel, “Lotería" by Karla Arenas Valenti, the characters Life and Death discover 11-year-old Clara in a town in southern Mexico and decide to play a game with her fate without her knowledge, even as she journeys into unfamiliar territory to search for her missing cousin. What choices are available to Clara and what will she get to decide versus what is “in the cards” for her? If you liked the Pixar movie, “Coco,” you will love “Lotería,” by the author of “Maria Mariposa,” “Esperanza Caramelo,” and children’s biographies of Selena Gomez and historical figures such as Marie Curie and Alan Turing.
You can borrow a copy (with a specially prepared reading guide just for our group) from the Connie Morella Library; just ask at the Check Out or Information Desks for the September book for No Shelf Control. You can also access the book as an audiobook on the free library app, Libby. Unfortunately, the book is not available at this time as an e-book or through the Hoopla. If you get an e-version, please contact Mr. Jeff for the reading guide (jeffrey.coster@montgomerycountymd.gov). Even if you are not able to finish the reading, please come anyway and see if No Shelf Control might just be the place for you! The book for the February 19 meeting will be handed out at this meeting, and then available to pick up from the Connie Morella Library by anyone who missed it.
Library Program Attendance (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the suggested age range of the program. Children attending an MCPL program under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attending a program intended for children must have an accompanying child.
